Parcel X Door
Designed w/ Peter Waldman
Built w/ Barrett Eastwood
2004
An 8 foot tall, 6’-8” wide pivoting door and light fixture was designed and built in collaboration with UVA Professor Peter Waldmen for his home in Charlottesville. The scale of the installation made it almost more like a mobile wall than a door, allowing for incremental adjustments to the relationship between inside and outside.
The lighting figure embedded in the door helped provided lighting to the deck during the evening, and the same lights are used on the inside to create a cozy, downlit zone around the door – and reminding Professor Waldman to turn the door off before going to bed. Various metals, wood, and glass were fabricated and assembled over the course of a summer.
The deck was constructed of Ipe wood on a steel and wood substructure that floated over the existing membrane roof. A thin band of open steel deck encouraged drainage and created a zone for plants at the inner edge of the deck. The metal also corresponded to the dimension of the open door, tying together the horizontal and the vertical.
